A message from Greg:

My brother visited from overseas a couple of weeks ago, and whenever he’s here, we always try to walk the farm together. It’s a great opportunity to get some quality time with just the two of us since my parents live down the road, and most of his visit is usually spent with the whole family.

During afternoon chores, we stopped to take care of the turkeys, chickens, piglets, and the remaining breeding pigs. He asked questions about improvements we’d made on the farm, and we talked a lot about the upcoming changes.

Eventually, we made our way to the herd of pigs in the back field, one of my favorite parts of the farm, filled with green pasture and surrounded by trees just starting to turn orange.

We stood in the field watching the herd for over an hour, something that I haven’t been able to do for more than a few minutes at a time in ages. And as one of our chubby red pigs ran over to us with those floppy ears, something dawned on me. This is indeed a quality time.

We’re quickly headed toward (and have already passed) a lot of “this is the last time” moments.

The last time we’d have piglets born here. The last time we’d have a boar and breeding pigs on the farm. The last time I’d stand in a lush summer pasture with my brother, looking over a herd of happy pigs.

As we inch closer and closer to the time when the farm will go into hibernation mode, and we won’t be hearing our rooster every morning or seeing you at the Farm Store each week, I’m reminding myself to savor these moments – they’ve been some of the most joyful of my life.

Your Farmers,
Greg & Jenney
