We were already spending what felt like every waking moment outside working with the animals and building up the infrastructure for the farm. So the idea of gardening and spending more time sweating through my clothes with my knees scraping through the dirt, felt like a special brand of torture to me.

I said it back then, and I meant it with literally every bone in my body: Gardening is the WORST possible hobby a farmer could ever have!

But time has passed, as it does. And this past summer, after I swore off gardening forever, I found myself increasingly intrigued with the idea of planting a little garden off of the kitchen.

When the temptation hit, we reigned each other in, planting just a few herbs, tomatoes, and a couple of flowers, remembering the lessons learned from our earlier years on the farm.

But I spotted it right away… gone was the resentment and frustration. Watching the plants take hold and grow right where I asked them to was nothing short of miraculous.

Just by existing, the garden added an unparalleled beauty to our space and flavor to our foods. Even the weeding felt doable and…fun?

Suffice it to say, I shouldn’t have been the least bit surprised when Greg told me he was planning to build us an even bigger garden for this summer. But, I was….

I can’t say yet how the expanding garden will shake out this year or whether the feeling of utter rage will strike again! But I’m cautiously optimistic.

I’m also deeply aware at this moment in time that leaning into a hobby that we both shared long before the farm came roaring into our lives speaks volumes about where we are in life.

Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
