We lost our boar, Bernard, unexpectedly earlier this summer, which means that for the past few months, we’ve been relying on our other boar, Benji, to hold down the fort by himself.
Greg hasn’t flinched in his confidence in the ole boy. But my anxious self has been a little on edge about it.
After all, every few weeks, we have a sow that needs to be bred. And if Benji were to get injured or sick somehow, our breeding would come to a screeching halt, which would mean that we’d be without organic meat to share with you next year.
Luckily, no such calamity has transpired, and what’s been fun and a little bittersweet has been watching the final litters from Bernard’s line come into the world this month.
The task at hand now, besides making sure the sows are all recovering well, and the new piglets are safe and sound, is to determine which one will become our boar for 2023 and beyond.
It’s a decision that’s not as easy as it probably sounds – there are lots of male piglets to choose from, and there are so many factors at play, including size, genetics (we can’t go wrong with Bernard’s line!), body conformation, appearance, behavior, etc.
Greg’s quite careful about such things – you know him! And after some very close inspection and introspection, he opted for the little guy above. So, without further ado, we’d like you to meet our new baby boar, Buster!
We can’t wait to watch him grow and serve the farm for years and years to come.
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
PS – Despite a busy Farm Store last Sunday, we have a great selection of pork in our freezers. Order ahead HERE or swing by on Sunday morning, and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon.
