Fall is usually the season on the farm when, for better or for worse, it feels like the wheels might actually come off the wagon.

It’s the feeling of being stretched in too many directions – turkeys, pigs, and chickens all needing to be rotationally grazed every few days, piglets hitting the ground day and night, pastures and woodlands growing wild.

All the while, there’s that foreboding sense that the hardest season of the year – winter – is inching its way closer and closer and there’s much to be done to prepare.

Historically speaking, it’s also been the season where my hip gives way. I can’t believe this is true, but every fall for the past 3 years, I’ve either been preparing for surgery for this injury or recovering from surgery for this injury. 😮‍💨

But here we are. It’s been 4 months since we made the decision to scale back the farm. And all of a sudden, in the past few weeks especially, things are REALLY feeling different around here.

It could be said that if we’ve been drinking from the fire hose that is the farm, this summer was when we made the conscious decision to instead sip from a cup – selling all our sows and boars, canceling some butcher dates, setting a date to go into hibernation and sharing all this with you, the folks who feel like family now!

This is why this season feels so different – we’re finally catching our breath.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s still a farm to be run and work to be done. But without that hose blowing in our faces day and night, there’s time for self care. There’s time for projects – have you seen the progress Greg and Amanda are making on the barn addition? And there’s time for rest.

There isn’t any doubt in our minds now, this is just what we needed.

Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
