We got the call a few weeks ago. Trying hard to raise her voice above the loud chirping, I could hear the postal worker tell Greg that the turkeys had arrived.
The first time we got this call was 7 years ago while living in an apartment in downtown Rochester. The phone rang, and I vividly remember the two of us that morning, springing out of bed as if we were on fire.
We then proceeded to buzz around like bees all morning as we picked up the baby turkeys from the city’s post office (they arrive when they’re just 1-day old!) and brought them to their new home – farmland we were borrowing out in Victor.
Excitement is an emotion, I’ve learned, that’s easily confused with anxiety. And while I’m not exactly sure which of these emotions was dominating that morning, the adrenaline was definitely pumping.
Now we have the luxury of experience to lean on and the convenience of farmland to call our own. And when the call arrived this year? All I could see was a quiet confidence in the farm kitchen that morning.
Everything had already been in motion for weeks now – heat lamps were on, feeders and waterers were set up. And the brooder – the warm space we keep them in for the first few weeks when they’re at their most fragile stage – was ready to go.
It’s hard to believe that in just 3 months, these birds will be making their way to your Thanksgiving table. As always, between now and then, you have our word that they’ll be well cared for by yours truly.
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
