Last week was the last week of broiler (meat) chicken chores, of chicken processing, labeling and weighing. It was the last week of selling chicken at the Brighton Market and also our last week of our Chicken CSA (thank you to all of our amazing members!).
It feels strange to be closing the door on all of that, especially because we know how happy our chicken customers have been over the years. But we’re so excited to be moving on and we wanted to share a few things about what comes next.
If you’re thinking that we’re about to announce that we’re going to start raising beef or that I’m finally getting that dairy cow… guess again. No Stonecrop sheep. Or goats, either.
It’s true that we’ll absolutely have more time next season without broiler (meat) chickens and we could very “easily” add another enterprise to the farm. But, we won’t be adding a thing. Yes, you read that right. We’re not going to add anything new to the farm next year and here’s why…
We’re true believers of the idea that LESS IS MORE. With farming in particular, it’s soooo easy to fall into the trap of adding a little of this and a little of that. And then we’d wind up scattering your energy so much that you’re not able to do a great job, with anything.
But we’re not going to do this. Instead, we’re staying laser focused on the things that we’re already doing really well and we’re going to keep finding ways to make them even better.
This means finding ways to make the work more efficient and the farm more productive. This means making the experience of buying from us even easier and more enjoyable. And creating new strategies to make the work safer for our bodies for the long-haul.
Greg always says this is a marathon, and not a sprint. Having run marathons before, it seems to me like we’re the mile #5 mark. We’re hitting our stride and we’re on pace. Our goals are clear (click here for a refresher) and we know deep in our hearts, that with your support, WE CAN DO THIS!
Your Farmers,
Jenney and Greg
