It can be stress-inducing, with some moments that are forever seared in our minds.
Living on a farm with hundreds of animals to care for.
Throw in this most recent holiday storm, complete with a bomb cyclone, subzero wind chill, and 60 mph gusts, and we’ve had a real party on our hands!
Ever since my hip injury, my outdoor responsibilities are still quite limited. Greg, on the other hand, is in charge of all the outdoor farm tasks, both the mundane and the complex.
He covered himself head to toe – face mask, ski goggles and all – hoping to avoid frostbite. I was convinced it wasn’t really enough and was mentally prepared for the worst.
But when he came back inside each day, despite the cold hands and wind-chapped cheeks, he was delighted.
With just a few words, he put my heart at ease.
“Everything’s good!” he’d yell from the top of the basement steps.
It’s hard to forget what happened our first year here – a storm not unlike the one we just had, came through, and the winds ripped one of our freshly built high tunnels right out of the ground.
The sound of the plastic sheet snapping in the wind and the sight of the metal bars bent in all the wrong ways, having almost impaled the tractor parked nearby, are forever seared in our minds.
Last week, though, the farm fared well, livestock and humans alike, with the one exception being a tarp that covered the shed near the Farm Store.
We weren’t lucky. I’m convinced that experience, more than anything, seemed to be our secret weapon. It guided us on how to prepare and manage the harsh conditions. For that and so much more, we’re eternally grateful.
Happy New Year!!! May it be warm and bright for you and yours!
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
