This little known fact seems to surprise just about everyone we meet, but the land on which we farm and the house in which we live were entirely separate entities before we moved in.

It’s true!

They were different parcels that just so happened to be up for sale at the same exact time. Which meant that purchasing both required two 2 separate deeds, 2 separate mortgages, etc.

That being the case, not much of anything or anyone traversed these property lines for the preceding 20+ years before we moved in, except of course for our resident deer population and the occasional neighborhood kid scooting around on a dirt bike.

But now, these once distinct parcels tell a different story, one of a great merge. And interestingly enough, the most recent example of this evolution is now hanging in our living room.

We found the Sure Crop sign back in 2017 when we were working on moving the barn from its original location a few miles down the road, to our farm.

At the time, this metal sign was being used to seal up an old broken window opening on the backside of the barn. And in thick of the initial tear down, I pried it off the wall and threw it onto the pile of junk destined for the dump.

It took us several weeks to finish this first stage of the barn project, dismantling the barn piece by piece until all that was left was the 200-year-old beams, carefully tagged and readied to make the journey over to our farm.

At some point during that process, maybe it was after I had to shovel out that stinky raccoon’s nest from underneath the barn’s staircase, I found my thoughts wandering back to that sign.

Sure Crop, as a brand of fertilizer, meant absolutely nothing to either of us. But it was also a name surprisingly similar to Stonecrop – just 2 letters apart!

Why would this barn that had absolutely nothing to do with us just a few weeks prior, almost have the name of our farm written inside of it?

My mom taught me to listen in moments like this. I could hear her in my head then just like I can now, telling me “remember, there are no accidents in life.” And just like that, Greg and I took the sign out of the dumpster and realized that the sign was, in fact, a sign that we were headed in the right direction.

I sort of regret to admit it, but our beloved sign has been tucked under beds and stuck deep within various closets around the house until this week, when Greg went down to the basement and framed it with, alas, more leftover barn wood.

This piece of the farm has finally found its rightful place in the center of our home. And seeing it there now, just feels right.

Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
