Last Friday night, as we were driving home from a friend’s house, I looked over toward a neighbor’s farm and saw, through the darkness, someone driving a tractor, much larger than ours, up the field with the lights blazing.
As I often do when I’m out of my depth, I looked to Greg, to fill in the gaps and asked him “What’s happening over there?”
Confident as could be, he replied “It’s planting time,” as if he was just down there working with them, and not sitting on our friend’s patio eating s’mores in the city with me.
With my eyebrows crinkled up high on my face and the sound of disbelief in my voice, I said “Really? But, it’s like… 10 at night?”
He exhaled and reminded me that it doesn’t matter the time of day or night. Come hell or hell water, those seeds have to get into the ground somehow.
I fell silent and realized that what I wasn’t recognizing from the vantage point in the passenger seat of the car, is actually one of the most important realities of farm life that I actually know like the back of my hand – the hustle.
The radical act of farming – a profession with a goal to grow something somewhere and in our case, feed the very best quality food to the families who shop with us each week – sometimes requires us to work the most ungodly of hours and push ourselves, hard.
It’s just a fact of this #FarmLife. And interestingly, I don’t think the farmer planting rows of corn in the dark that night or the farmer I love so much out rotating pigs onto fresh pasture, or me who’s lovingly sharing these thoughts with you tonight, would have it any other way.
Truth be told, we love this work and are grateful to have the opportunity to do it, for you.
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
