In spite of the rip-roaring pandemic, life on the farm has been quiet and predictable this week.
That’s not because we did something cool or invented some new way of doing things. But because nature gave us some grace for The Shift this week.
The Shift, as we like to call it, happens just twice a year and it involves bringing all the animals from their summer paddocks in the back fields into their winter paddocks in the front field (or vice versa). And it’s no easy feat.
It requires a lot of planning, time outdoors, physical effort putting in fence posts and running electric wires, and most of all, patience working with animals who are just as spirited as we are.
I shared about The Shift around this time last year in a newsletter called “Finally, the Exhale.” And as you can probably tell from the title, it was a stressful transition made all the more challenging by a big storm that hit and dropped 2 feet of snow on us.
This year, there was no rushing, intense time pressure, or blowing snow drifts. Thanks to the milder weather, we’ve been able to take our time and help the animals slowly ease into their new winter quarters. We’ve all been better off.
Throughout much of this work, though, we’ve found our minds continuing to wander back to you. These are extradinarily challenging times and we do hope that you and your sweet families are doing okay.
Sending love and good health, always.
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
PS – We’re still working on finding a way to bring veggies to the Farm Store so you can have a trusted source of organic/local veggies this winter and not make as many trips to the grocery store. More info on this coming very soon!
PPS – We raise pork ALL year round and this will continue this through the winter. If you would like to place an order, download the 5 Easy Steps to ordering HERE.
