It’s official…fall is creeping in. The air is crisp and cool, the tips of some of the leaves on our trees are starting to turn orange and the sun is rising a bit later and setting a bit earlier. We feel these subtle changes as we carry out our farm tasks and it reminds us of all we have to be thankful for.

We helped our six week old turkey babies out of the brooder and onto pasture last week.  We were amazed that out of 160 day old turkey poults (turkey babies) that arrived in the mail six weeks ago, 157 made it to pasture. Typically, the farming textbooks estimate a 10% loss in the first few weeks, so we’re proud that to say we’ve mastered our turkey brooding with less than 2 % loss. They are all very happy to be munching on clover and bugs and will be moved at least once a week so they can continue to do so until their big day.

Unlike our summer turkeys, these birds are all destined to be Thanksgiving centerpieces. Deposits are starting to flow in so please remember to get your orders in soon. Deposits can be made online, by mail or in person.

Ginger season is also upon us! We’ve been harvesting small amounts of ginger for personal use for the past few weeks to be sure it has sized up well and are happy to report that it is as tasty as ever! It is super, duper tender and bursting with flavor. We will have ginger for sale at the Brighton Farmers Market and the weekly Thursday Farm Store as supplies last.  For those who are wondering, our turmeric is looking great too and will be coming later this fall!

In our free time (ha!) we are also in the process of taking down a 200 yr old timber frame barn and moving it 4 mi down the road to our property in Henrietta. This story deserves a whole newsletter (or maybe even a book) but we have to say that we couldn’t be more thankful for the generous customer and now dear friend who has trusted us to relocate and maintain this beautiful historic structure!

We love to farm and provide community members like YOU with the highest quality meat, eggs and speciality produce around. Thank you for supporting us and our farm!

All the best,
Greg & Jenney
