We’ve adjusted to life on the farm in soooo many ways. Looking back, I think some of the adjustments were probably pretty predictable – like how we wake up early and don’t travel much anymore.
But there are other adjustments that are frankly…just plain weird.
I’ve been pondering these for some time and I’ve decided that these are my top 3 weirdest farm habits…
1. I have countless photos of pig butts on my phone. Now, bear with me here…but photos really are one of the easiest ways to timestamp important events! And as you know, we don’t hesitate to use modern tech to our advantage around here. So, when a sow is going into heat or is being bred or we suspect was bred (you get the picture), I quickly get out my phone and snap a photo. It seems strange, I know. But I swear, it’s one of the ways I keep up with my record keeping!
2. Sometimes, I run over to the window and just stand there, listening really hard. It makes Jenney laugh. But apparently, I have a fear that there’s something wrong with one of our animals. It turns out that 99.9999% of the time, I’m wrong and she’s right and all is well. But one time, my paranoia saved a flock of ducks and this silly goose from a fox attack! So, maybe it pays off every now and then?
3. I’m borderline obsessed with weather forecasts. I can probably tell you approximate highs/lows and the % chance of rain or snow for the upcoming 5 days, ALL YEAR ROUND. And don’t even get me started on wind gusts.
These little quirks have been rather unexpected, but for the most part welcomed. They’re all part of this path, and even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, I know it’s the right path for me.
Your Farmers,
Greg & Jenney
