I went back home to Syracuse last weekend for Mother’s Day. My parents and four out of my six siblings were there, with their toddlers, babies and preteens in tow.
It was a blast in all the ways that you’re envisioning. And without the added responsibility of kids of our own, we relished the opportunity to take something off the momma’s minds and cook the celebratory meal for the whole gang.
We wanted to satisfy everyone’s tastes – even the youngest of the bunch – and opted for a deep dark chili with the tomatoes and peppers we froze at peak ripeness last summer, simmered with a couple of pounds of our ground pork.
We added big tray of home-made mac and cheese with little bits of our crisped ham on top, a big salad with fresh greens, onions and toppers from our Farm Store and hot cornmeal muffins on the side.
If your mouth is watering, you’re not alone. Mine still is, too, and I’ll tell you why – it’s not a fancy cooking technique or an intricate recipe that makes a meal like this unforgettable. It’s just the magic that happens when we share great food with the people we love.
For under $100 total, we sourced almost every component of the meal – right down to the organic milk in the mac and cheese – from local farms like ours. And when you infuse that sorta quality into a meal like this, it’s just bound to knock the socks right off of every one.
Kristin Kimball, a farmer mentor of ours in the North Country, recently wrote in her weekly blog that “Eating seasonally from the farm means getting reacquainted with the ancient rhythm of the food calendar rather than the perpetual availability of the supermarket. When we eat seasonally, we trade ubiquity for quality, and for taste” and I just couldn’t agree more.
If you’re ready to bring this type of quality into your kitchen this week, we’re your people. It’s a FRESH PORK week and we’ve got a great supply of everything to keep your taste buds dancing just like my niece and nephews were on Mother’s Day! Order ahead HERE and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon.
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
