We used to tell people that we’d never hire an employee.
We’d say it just wasn’t possible, in this line of work, to afford one. And that managing an employee would take more time than we had to spare.
And that if we were doing the job right – innovating and creating the right systems – we wouldn’t need one anyways.
It was all 100% true for a time. Until last fall when my hip had to be opened up again and during that very same week, Greg threw out his back.
We then understood, for the first time, that all the systems and efficiencies in the world were useless, if we didn’t have a team capable of picking up the ball and running with it, in our absence.
We got through that week somehow, as we always do. But the weight of knowing we were unintentionally and uncomfortably close to breaking our promises to you helped something huge come into focus.
We needed a second in command – someone who knows how to do every single task on the farm and can help lighten the load during the weeks where we’re NOT incapacitated. And take over entirely during the weeks that will surely come again, where one or both of us are.
To say it’s been a long journey to get here, would be a huge understatement. Going a step further and saying that we completely over-thought on this one might also be true – we actually took an entire course on all this this winter just to make sure we’re approaching it carefully.
But we’re doing it. We started to onboard our first employee this week and we couldn’t be happier and more excited to introduce you to Abby!
Do us a huge favor and hit reply to this email and welcome our first employee, Abby, to our team. Share a few words about yourself, how you found us, and what this farm and the food we grow means to you. We’ll compile them all as a little gift just for her!
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
