Can’t believe I’m telling you this!? I asked Greg to pee on me once. And believe it or not, there was actually a perfectly good reason behind this very strange request.
It all happened well before we started the farm when we were sea-kayaking off the coast Madagascar, where Greg was working on a research fellowship at the time.
As we were paddling along and taking in the sights, my primal instincts kicked in and I started to register that there was something out of the ordinary nearby. You know the feeling, right?
I looked around and cautiously paddled a little bit forward. A split second later, long blue tentacles came rushing down the top of my paddle toward my face.
Ahhhhhh!!!
I tried to pull the strands of blue goo off me but it was of little help since at this point, the mysterious sea creature had wrapped itself around my arms and chest.
Unfortunately, the more I pulled, the stickier it got (it has barbed tentacles!) and the more stinging I felt.
Owwww!!! OWWWWWW!!!
This was when I conveniently remembered that episode of Friends where Monica was stung by a jellyfish and convinced Chandler to pee on her, and I started my pleading.
All he had to do was get into the water, which presumably contained many more of these unidentified blue stinging things, and wrangle himself up and onto my kayak, to pee on me. What could be so hard about that?
As you probably guessed, he calculated the risks and benefits (he’s a scientist after all), and wasn’t the least bit inspired. So, we floated on like this a while longer, until the tentacles became more forgiving and could be pulled off and the stinging subsided.
We’ve never forgotten this moment. Which is why when we slipped away from the farm last week and went sea-kayaking for the first time since that adventure in Madagascar in 2009, we couldn’t help but laugh.
You’ll be happy to know that there were no Portuguese Man of Wars during our most recent adventure. Just lots of rest and relaxation which was truly the greatest gift these two farmers could ever receive.
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
