There’s a trend that I’m sure you’ve seen in action countless times before.
The farmers that live down the road make the decision that it’s time to retire and the farm kids aren’t the least bit interested in taking over the family business.
The land’s appraised and the “for sale” sign goes up. It ends up being too cost prohibitive for most farmers to afford. So eventually, it’s sold to developers and transformed into a housing development.
The speed with which this all happens and the prime farm land that’s lost along the way is remarkable.
Considering the energy that we’ve poured into revitalizing these fields and forests and the community that’s come to depend on us for groceries each week, we’ve always hoped that these 56 acres would have a different future.
Our deepest hope, is that when it’s time for us to hang up our coats to dry and formally retire, that a young farming couple will want to pick up right where we will eventually leave off.
The concerns about land security and development pressure are real, though. And with all this in mind, we’ve been quietly pursuing something exciting to protect the future of agriculture on the farm.
Just last week, we heard word that our land conservation application was officially approved, which means we’re moving forward with The Genesee Land Trust to sell the development rights of the farm to New York State!
It will take many months to finalize, maybe over a year. But as long as the funding goes through, these acres will always and forever be protected as farm land.
