My Dad’s favorite story to tell, especially when we’re all sitting around the dinner table together, is about the moment he met Greg for the first time.

It happened one night during our senior year in college, when my Dad and brother came to campus for a visit.

At the time, my Dad didn’t know a thing about Greg. I hadn’t told him we were dating or that he even existed. For all he knew, I was as single as could be.

But as luck would have it, Greg (the boy I had been smitten with for months) walked into the same pub where my family and I were eating dinner that night.

I remember Greg and I locked eyes for a second. And then, I turned my back, signaling that we were not, in my estimation, the least bit ready for a “meet the parents” type moment.

The chit-chat with my family continued until my Dad looked over at me and stopped me mid-conversation. Just to make sure I heard him above the roar of the crowded pub, he went on and yelled “That boy over there won’t stop looking at you…. I think he LOVES you!”

My face said it all, as it often does, and apparently so did Greg’s. Because, before we knew it, Greg was standing beside me, meeting my Dad and brother for the first time.

It was at that moment, as my Dad likes to say, that he knew our love was real. Happy Fathers Day to all the Poppas out there!
