While I was putting dinner together this week, Greg came over to the kitchen sink to wash up and said “’I spent the entire day outside doing physical work, and boy, am I feeling it!”
Suffice it to say, he’s got spring in his step, but summer on his mind. And even though we’ve cleared some things off of our plates (i.e. growing ginger), the workload is steady.
Strangely, sometimes I catch myself wondering why. And then I’m quickly reminded of the fact that after the piglet explosion, we have more pigs on the farm than we’ve ever had before.
As you already know, this oversupply was a bit of an oversight. But on the other hand, it feels like it was written in the stars.
Typically, we squeak by knowing that just one litter gone wrong could set us back and prevent us from having pork to share with you 7 months later, when the piglets will be full grown.
For the first time, we now have the luxury of having more than enough. And the peace of mind that comes along with that is a beautiful thing.
Especially because beyond just supplying our herd, this success has also given us an opportunity to expand our impact and offer other farmers with – what I like to imagine – might just be the happiest and healthiest piglets on the planet.
We put the word out to the organic farm community a few weeks back and almost all of the 36 piglets that we didn’t need for our farm, were quickly claimed.
I wonder how pickup day will feel next week for me and Greg. I imagine, a little bitter because we’ll have to learn to let go and trust. And sweet because this is yet another step forward that will move us closer to our ultimate goal, which is to keep growing awesome food for you for years, and years to come.
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
