We have a 7 acre section of woodlands on the northwestern side of the farm that we just adore. It’s a young forest on a sloping hillside with lots of shade and interesting plant life.
We don’t talk about it much. But we’ve known for some time that it would make a perfect paddock for pasturing pigs pending parturition (we love a good alliteration!), especially during the warm summer months.
As is often the case with most things on the farm, there’s a little hitch. A big one, actually…
While accessing these woods, for us humans, is a breeze – it requires nothing more than a willingness to get your feet wet – accessing it with a herd of pigs is next to impossible since there’s a substantial creek (called Red Creek) that runs beside it and isolates it from the rest of the farm.
I hoped I had solved the problem when I wrote my first grant application for the farm earlier this year and requested funding to cover the cost of hiring an excavation company to install a small bridge for us.
Unfortunately, there were over 600 applicants and we didn’t make the cut. Which meant that for a few minutes there, we thought these acres might be off limits for yet another year. But then, we got back to doing what farmers do best and stepped up to the challenge.
Have we ever installed a large culvert pipe before? Not exactly. But we have the tools and brain power and the determination to do it. So, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
Wish us good luck with this one. We might need it!
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
