There’s been a blowing rain storm hovering over the farm today.

And while I’m in here catching up on emails and staying nice and cozy inside, Greg’s been working hard out there, helping the pigs transition into their winter quarters.

We usually move them up toward the end of November. But with the unseasonably warm weather this fall, we kept the herd rotating through the back fields for a few extra weeks this year.

They were as comfortable as could be back there in their winter fortresses. But it was time to make the move – they’ll be safer near the front of the farm for the winter, where we can access them more easily as the temps drop and the snow starts flying.

The undertaking of moving the larger herd of pigs happens just twice a year (once in the spring and once now, in the early winter) and it’s not an easy one, especially considering the size of the herd these days.

Greg’s using what we lovingly call the “pig taxi” (think of it as a big dog crate that’s carried by the tractor!) and our pig trailer to shuffle the pigs up, a few at a time.

I suspect he’ll probably make 10 trips back and forth today alone. And tomorrow, when he’s done moving this group, he’ll start shuffling the 2 breeding herds up front.

I’ve peeked out the window a few times today to catch a glimpse of the action. I like that I can now see the pigs from our bedroom and office windows. And I also like that you might be able to see them (from a distance) while you’re shopping at the Farm Store, too.

Overall, in spite of the rain storm that just won’t let up today, I can say with certainty that the pigs look happy in their new paddocks – they have fresh pasture and are starting to explore their winter shelter – a high tunnel (aka green house) that will help keep them warm.

And when Greg’s done for the day I know he’ll be just as happy too – knowing the animals are safe and sound always gives him peace. Given the time of year, it’s perfect timing, I’d say.

Your Farmers,

Jenney & Greg
