We were putting in the maximal amount of effort that first year. But I don’t think anyone, from the outside looking in, could have said we were at the top of our game.

We didn’t have nice pastures – everything was brambles as far as the eye could see. We didn’t have much in the way of farm infrastructure – the barn didn’t find its way to us until the following year.

And believe it or not, we didn’t even have much in the way of farm animals at the time – just a few flocks of chickens and a handful of pigs.

We hoped the passion we hold for the farm and the food that comes from it would make up for all that. And so we put out the invitation and hoped for the best.

Getting ready for the first tour was grueling – we mowed the walking path around the farm using a push mower, since we didn’t have a tractor or even a driving lawn mower at the time.

And in keeping with our perfectionist tendencies, we made extensive flashcards with notes and did numerous “run-throughs,” just to make sure we wouldn’t forget any of the important details.

When the day finally came, what happened was exactly what’s happened at every farm tour we’ve hosted ever since…

Our people showed up with curiosity and an open heart, just like we did. And along the farm path, amongst the laughter and story telling and sometimes hilariously bizarre animal encounters, a richer and truer partnership formed.
