Do you ever start working on a project and get yourself 90% of the way done, finish everything essential, and then sit back and let that last 10% go on FOREVER?
Unfortunately, that’s been my (Farmer Greg) habit for the past couple of years. Maybe it was a coping mechanism I developed to deal with the overwhelm inherent to starting a farm? Or maybe it was my subconscious finding a way to avoid making certain decisions? Who knows.
But back in January, during our yearly planning meeting (which was so helpful and we can’t wait to tell you about, by the way!), I made a commitment to close the loop on projects before I start new ones.
What I mean by “close the loop” is this… no more building a high tunnel (unheated greenhouse) to functional condition only to wait 3 months to install proper door latches. No more waiting 2 years (yes, you read this correctly) to put the trim up on our bathroom renovation. And no more carefully researching a farm tool that I know we need and then taking 3 whole weeks to finally get around to clicking “purchase.”
And do you know why I decided to focus my energy on this habit? It’s not just that it’s a total time sink and because it preoccupies way too much of my mental space, which is already pulled in a million different directions.
It’s because I care so deeply about guiding this farm forward and helping it reach its full potential. We want to keep growing exceptional food and continue to be your farmers for the next year, and the next 20 years, and I know we won’t get there if we’re dragging our feet and leaving projects incomplete.
Lately, with this new mindset, we’re been making huge progress on the farm and it feels incredible! And, in case you’re wondering, the handles are now on, the equipment has been purchased, and the trim is finally up. What a relief!
Your Farmers,
Jenney & Greg
